Building the Website, Rebuilding the Self

Behind the Scenes of Dragonflyinkriyation

I

A little context before I begin

If you have arrived here through the writing library of my website, you may have come looking for something completely different. Maybe you were drawn to a particular title, or were simply exploring the library, or you may have found your way here through my tarot work. Whatever brought you here, this piece is a little different from some of the other writing I share.

I wanted to write something about the process of creating this website, partly because I am finally reaching the point where I can look at it and say, yes, this thing is actually beginning to exist. It is not quite the same as the moment when a website goes live and you can send somebody a link, because the visible website is really only the end of a much longer process. There have been months of thinking, designing, writing, changing my mind, stepping away from it, coming back to it, learning new technology and, most importantly, encountering quite a lot of myself along the way.

That last part is probably why I felt compelled to write this.

The idea came to me in the shower, as ideas often do.

On the surface, I have been building a tarot website. Underneath that, I have been trying to establish a new foundation for myself at a particular point in my life, in a new country, within a changing technological landscape and while bringing together many different parts of who I am. So although this is not an autobiography, and I am certainly not attempting to tell you my entire life story here, it is a reflection on what happened when something that initially looked like a relatively straightforward creative project became connected to almost everything else I was living through.

I also wanted to put this somewhere in the library rather than make it a major announcement on the front page of the website. That distinction matters to me. I like the idea that this writing can simply exist here, alongside the other pieces, available to anyone who happens to be curious enough to wander into this part of the site. You do not need to read it, and I am not expecting you to. Something in the title may draw you in. You may read a few paragraphs and move on. You may return another day. I actually quite like that relationship with writing, because not everything needs to be pushed into somebody's attention before it has even had a chance to find its own reader.

So this is me opening the door a little further and letting you see what was happening behind the scenes while Dragonflyinkriyation, not “in creation”,  was taking shape.
